The total population of Kerala stood at 31,838,619 as per the provisional results of the Census of India 2001. All India decadal growth rate of population during 1991-2001 is 21.34%. The State has pre-eminent position in the sex ratio, i.e., the number of females per thousand males. The proportion of female to male population is 1058 per 1000. The State with an average of 90.92 per cent literacy, against the national average of 65.38, is on the top among all the States and Union territories.
